FAQ
If you’re considering a new project, you may have a few questions on how to get started. I’ve created this section to help with some of those initial questions, but do not hesitate to contact me. I am here to help you get started on your journey!
-
Engaging an architect early in the process is the most beneficial, such as before or during a property purchase, or even in the early planning stages of a new build. Early collaboration helps clarify goals, tackle site constraints, and answer zoning questions. Most jurisdictions in the U.S. require a licensed professional to be involved in new homes, additions, and substantial renovations.

For homeowners:
I specialize in all things related to custom homes, renovations, additions, and accessory units. There is no project too small!
For business owners/investors:
I have depth of experience and specialty in a variety of commercial projects, including multi-family apartments, townhomes, restaurants, offices, and retail. Contact me to schedule an initial consultation, and we’ll discuss if I am a good fit for your project.
-
Architects typically follow a similar design process across the board, but depending on the project size it may be abbreviated or extended. A typical breakdown of the phases looks something like this:
Initial Consultation
I never charge for an initial consultation. If possible, I will visit your site and get a better understanding of your vision. To set one up, contact me here!
Schematic Design
This is the first design phase. We will go over different floor plans and 3D options to discover a design that fits your needs.
Design Development
Once the preliminary design is established, we will use this phase to form the finer details of the project, including materials and finishes. Once this phase is complete, we will have a set of drawings that depict the drawing in greater detail.
Construction Documents and Permitting
Finally, we will create the drawings needed to construct the building. I will submit the project for permit with the governing bodies on your behalf.
Construction Observation
I will remain involved through construction to observe the work and collaborate with your contractor to ensure it adheres to the construction documents we’ve created.
-
This can vary greatly due to a number of factors. For a new custom home, the process typically takes about 2-3 months from initial consultation to completion of the construction documents. Depending on the local jurisdiction, the permit review process may take additional time.
-
Historically, architects charge based off of a percentage of the construction cost. For commercial projects, this may be around 6% to 8%. For residential, it can be closer to 10%.
I do not set my fees in this manner. I typically provide a fixed, lump-sum fee calculated based on the typical number of hours required for similar project types. I will give this amount to you up-front in a detailed proposal.
I also offer hourly fees for design services if you are seeking preliminary options and may not be committed to the project yet.
I am happy to discuss fee solutions that fit your needs!
-
Typically, I provide design services for everything except furnishings and decor. I am happy to assist with anything “attached” to the building. During the design process, I can also assist with the anticipated furniture layout so you have a better understanding of the space and flow of living in the space before it is built.
If desired, I am happy to recommend interior designers for your project. -
Yes, I can recommend experienced contractors or help facilitate a competitive bid process if you wish. I am happy to work with any contractors that you have in mind.
-
I recommend involving a contractor in the early phases of design. They will be able to familiarize themselves with the project and provide advise based on their expertise.
This not a requirement, however. At a minimum, you will need a contractor involved when we submit for a permit.
-
Absolutely! I can also recommend consultants that specialize in state and federal historic tax credits that may be advantageous for your project.
